What's Hot in Enterprise IT/VC - Issue #153
random week with some tweetstorms on scaling growth, how to negotiate and what went into a first check memo for Superhuman in 2014; deep read on what it takes to have CD4ML and great list of top 100 DevOps practitioners to follow…
Scaling Startups
My order of operations when I sit down with a startup to figure out how to grow their new product.
1) first, is it working?
Usually the answer is no :) I look at retention rates, DAU/MAU, session lengths, how many visits are driven via push notifs, etc etc. Lots of benchmarking

Founders, you don’t get if you don’t ask - read Yan-David’s (Coatue) cheat sheet on negotiating
Want to get what you ask for?
Negotiate.
No, it’s not a bad word. You do it all the time but probably don’t know it!
Here are the two things I did to get better at it:
1/ Read this book: https://t.co/Vu9whVgekf
2/ Use my cheat sheet: https://t.co/Az4acdLB6H

what went into our Superhuman investment memo in 2014…
@rahulvohra @Boldstartvc @firstround 🙏🏼 just for kicks, reminded me to look back at our memo from 2014 - key risks - not being able to build a world class product ✅, not being able to get users to pay ✅, not being able to cost effectively get distribution ✅ - 😃 https://t.co/QHcaSbIRhU

Continuous Delivery for Machine Learning
great paper on what CD for ML requires and why much more complex than tradition software - ML models subject to change in three axis: the code itself, the model, and the data. Behavior is often complex and hard to predict, harder to test, explain, and improve. Continuous Delivery for Machine Learning (CD4ML) is the discipline of bringing Continuous Delivery principles and practices to Machine Learning applications.
DevOps 100: Top leaders, practitioners, experts to follow
great list of DevOps influencers to follow on twitter to learn from the best in the field - nice to have Gareth Rushgrove at Snyk and one stealth founder 😃
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt believes biology is the next frontier in computing
so true - lots of data and analysis to be done
@s1p @springboot The growth of @springboot is part of a larger trend in enterprises: open source first, cloud-native, developer-first integration patterns. https://t.co/BbvS7rdeZt is now the grand central station where OSS technologies integrate and connect.

great read on the evolution of compute and the financial markets and current state of play today
Expect to see the best companies separate the tasks of capital raising + listing by going public through direct listings. Why pay an additional 20-50% “fee” to the banks' most active trading customers when those returns belong to companies’ shareholders? https://t.co/CeyBlssJcO

These are the top Y Combinator companies of all time, based on valuation
awesome to have Front (a portfolio co) on this list - In October of 2018, Y Combinator published a mega list of the top 101 companies to have gone through the accelerator, as sorted by each company’s valuation. This morning they updated the list. Valuation as a ranking metric has its faults, of course. It’s a measurement largely of perception; a projection of a company’s perceived […]
